Together for success - social interactions and learning climate in the tutorial

Imagine that your tutorial is like a joint project in which all participants and you are working on a large jigsaw puzzle. Everyone brings their own pieces - some fit immediately, others need a little patience and support. Your role as a tutor is not only to find the missing pieces, but also to make sure that everyone stays motivated and feels part of the team.

A positive learning environment is created when participants feel that their common goal is important. You create this atmosphere by:
  1. Set imaginative impulses: Perhaps you start with a creative introductory question that gets everyone talking or you tell a short anecdote that lightens up the topic. These moments arouse curiosity and create a connection.
  2. Involve everyone actively: You realise that some are reluctant? Perhaps you ask them directly to share their opinion or you use methods such as small group work in which everyone can exchange ideas.
  3. Emphasise strengths: Praise and recognition are like a catalyst for commitment. If a participant has a particularly good idea, emphasise it. Show that even small contributions are important.

But what happens when the climate changes? Perhaps there is someone who suddenly switches off or distracts you by being restless. Here, too, you are in demand:

At the end of such a tutorial, participants leave not only with new insights, but also with the feeling of having been part of a supportive and inspiring group. As a tutor, your sense of social dynamics and your commitment ensured that a group of individuals became a strong team that completed the puzzle of learning together.
