Lecture and Exercises

Inversion techniques are of fundamental importance in geophysics because they allow material-specific parameter models to be reconstructed in three dimensions from measured field data. Linear inverse problems (e.g., magnetics, gravimetry, refraction seismics) and nonlinear inverse problems (e.g., geoelectrics, electromagnetics) are addressed, and regularization strategies and the influence of the eigenvalue spectrum on the solution are discussed. In addition to Newton, Gauss-Newton, and quasi-Newton approaches, resolution and error analyses are presented. Exercises on the computer deepen the students' comprehension by programming simple problems using Matlab.
