GIMENO UGALDE Seminar: Migration cinema in Portugal and Spain
Although Portugal and Spain have long histories of emigration, both countries experienced large waves of immigration in the 1990s. This phenomenon has impacted their social structures and generated a range of different public conversations. Little by little, filmmakers have started to pay attention to this situation, creating a modest corpus of films—both fictional and documentary—that deal with migration. This seminar focuses on the analysis of migration cinema by Portuguese and Spanish filmmakers, addressing the following research questions: What is migration cinema? Which films should be included in this category? Is the story of migration always one of either alienation or assimilation? Does migration always have to be shot through the lens of cinéma vérité? How is the migrant subject portrayed on screen? What kinds of narratives and aesthetics prevail in this cinema? The films we will discuss in class will be assigned in advance as homework.
