Materials in Biomedicine

TU Dresden | Sommersemester 2024 Materials in Biomedicine

The lecture series „Materials in Biomedicine” deals with the major biomaterial classes and their properties including tissue-implant interactions in biological systems. It will explain the basic concepts of biomaterials per se and in tissue engineering, presenting state-of-the-art applications in skin, bone and joint replacement as well as introduce students to dental implants, artificial heart valves, vascular prostheses and ophthalmic devices. The lecture series will further address state-of-the-art bioprinting of tissues, biomaterials as drug-delivery systems and biomaterial-associated infections. Another aspect will be methods for adjusting the surface properties of implants in terms of biocompatibility and functionality.

Topics:

Introduction and overview (V. Hintze)

Tissue implant interactions (V. Hintze)

Materials for skin regeneration (V. Hintze)

Materials in joint replacement (V. Hintze)

Dates: Wednesday 10.04., 17.04., 24.04., 08.05., 15.05., 29.05., 12.06., 19.06., 26.06., 03.07., 10.07., 17.07.2024

The lecture is held in English.

Important: The lecture series takes place each Wednesday 9:20 – 10:50 in presence in the Max-Bergmann-Center of Biomaterials (MBC), seminar room, ground floor - if not indicated/announced otherwise. PDF versions of the lectures will be provided in OPAL. Specific questions regarding the content can be sent to vera.hintze@tu-dresden.de. The lab course will be at the MBC as well. Exact dates will be arranged during the lecture.
