Quantum Theory I

Institute of Theoretical Physics | Wintersemester Quantum Theory I
Starting with experimental results giving evidences of the need quantum mechanics to model the microscopic world, a brief introduction containing the Schrödinger equation, the theory of Hilbert space, linear and Hermitian operators, particles with spin and many-body systems (bosons, fermions ) is given. A qualitative understanding of the chemical bond is taught. The infinite potential well, the potential barrier (tunneling), the harmonic oscillator and the hydrogen atom will be discussed. The angular momentum operators will be defined and their properties discussed. Approximation methods (variational calculus, perturbation theory) will be tackled by example.
