  • below a very informal guide to OPAL (I include only what I found unlogical)

ADDING COURSE OWNERS

  • course owners (full editing rights): presumably only people with PhD allowed but staff can be added as group owners

WRITE ACCESS TO TUTORS?

  • first: tutors need own ZIH account (apply for at: https://selfservice.zih.tu-dresden.de/)
  • set up 'security group' (=Rechtegruppe) with specific access/editing privileges: in the main menu in the top-middle (book, pen, two heads) > click on little down arrow to the right > select 'Rights management'

TEXT EDITOR FIELD : BUG

  • often, when a new text editor field opens, there is no cursor and no text can be inserted
  • as a quick-fix, insert an empty link, after that the cursor appears

COURSE ELEMENT FOR Übungszettel? - OPAL offers dedicated course element 'task' (one for each Übungszettel needed); there are integrated grading tools - I found this too complicated + I cannot easily replace exercise sheets if I spot an error later - instead: we now use a dedicated TUD-email address (=Funktionsaccount)

TASKS : UPLOAD FILES BUT NO ACCESS TO STORAGE FOLDER - 'task' > 'task assignment' : you can upload local files, but apparently you cannot access any 'storage folder' - you can add text with links to external URLs but the button to add links to files in the 'storage folder' is missing

FOLDER / STORAGE FOLDER : CONFUSING

  • OPAL distinguishes between the course element 'folder' (=collection of items available for download) and 'storage folder' (=this is what one normally would call a folder)
  • insert link to file only works for files stored in a storage folder, files are best put into a storage folder

OPAL LOVES META DATA

  • note that most elements have both a field 'description' (showed first) and a field 'content' (select from header), make sure you put your content into 'content'

BIBLIOGRAPHY

  • as far as I got it, this is just a fancy way to have a bibtex-database of references; I have not found out how to generate a neatly formatted list of references (with prescribed order of entries) from this database

TEST USER? - there is no test user by default, and the preview has limited capabilities - quick fix: I registered for an additional ZIH account (Funktionslogin) > perfect for testing

CALENDAR

  • double*click on date to create new appointment

SEND EMAIL?

  • how to send email? top middle (4 symbols: book, pen, two heads, gear) > 'two heads' = group management

> tick desired group > symbol 'letter' in header becomes active > write your email to selected group
