Inhalt
This is the IKTP/ITP-Proseminar with focus on theory/elementary particle physics/cosmology and related topics.As the title "Iconic Plots" suggests, there has been a range of breakthrough discoveries in these fields, and usually the resulting insights have culminated in plots/graphics which have then become famous and are now almost synonymous with the entire respective research fields.In the Proseminar, each talk should cover exactly one such plot, explain which breakthrough it represents and what its ingredients are.Guidelines for scientific presentations will be given and the proseminar talks will be analyzed.
Current Plan
The current plan is to do the talks remotely, via some videoconferencing tool. All participants should attend all talks.
It would be possible that e.g. the people who give the talks and myself are actually present in the seminar room, while the remaining audience is at home (it would depend on your preferences whether we do this or not).
We do two talks each time. Each talk would last for around 30 minutes, then we have around 15 minutes of discussion time after each talk. The discussion can take place either by writing questions/comments into the chat window or by unmuting your microphones and talking.
For the preparation I suggest the following procedure: around 4 weeks in advance of your talk we have one meeting, and either 1 or 2 weeks in advance of your talk we have a second meeting. In the second meeting you should have your talk prepared and we can do a trial run of your talk.
Since the talks are done remotely, the best seems to be that you prepare slides. You may use tools such as powerpoint, libreoffice, or latex (e.g. latex-beamer package) to prepare your slides. As a guideline, I would estimate that a 30-minute talk about such topics could have 10-20 slides. The main point should be that the audience in the end understands "what does the plot show, what does it mean and why is it important". So you should explain the relevant quantities/the relevant physics/of course mainly focusing on theoretical aspects, less on experimental aspects.
