TU Dresden | Wintersemester 2020 / 2021 Polymer-Physik / Polymer Physics

Polymer-Physik / Polymer Physics

This course puts a focus on polymer phyiscs, but the major concern of this course is the discussion of a number of general concepts that apply also to soft condensed matter or biological physics. Basic knowledge in Thermodynamics and Statistics is useful but not mandatory.

The lectures start with an introduction to polymers and methods to characterize macromolecules (molecular mass, size, structrue, etc ... ). Random walks are discussed as a fundamental concept for molecular conformations and for diffusion. This concept also allows to discuss the entropy based elasticity that is typical for soft matter. Excluded volume is a concept that allows to understand the relation between interactions and molecular conformations. These interactions also drive the phase behaviour of soft matter, which is discussed in a separate section. With these fundamental results, we are equipped to address the behaviour of molecular solutions, of molecules in a confined environment, and the self-assembly of molecules. Polymer networks, gels and percolation establish another topic of the lectures including the concommittant changes in the material properties like a transition from a liquid to a soft elastic body. The dynamics and the relaxation of macromolecules is yet another focal point of the lectures and we close our discussion with a brief survey of crystallization and liquid crystalline materials.

All lectures will be held online and it is planned at the moment that also all excercises will be given online. Please install zoom on your computer. The link

to the lectures will be activated approximatly 10 minutes prior to each lecture or exercise.

As part of this course you will receive a script, exercise sheets and supporting reading material over a password-secured server. All of these materials are written in English. Depending on the language skills of the participants, the course will be given in German or English.

I will send out an email containing password and access point for all lecture materials prior to the first lectures. Please register in time to receive this message.

In case of any questions please contact me via lang@ipfdd.de .

The lectures are scheduled as announced previously on Wednesdays (4. DS) from 13:00 to 14:30 and on Thursdays (2. DS) from 9:20 to 10:50.
