This lecture serves as an introduction to central theoretical concepts and methods of British Cultural Studies. These will be used to study key institutions and practices of (past and contemporary) British culture and their representation in various media. Topics to be discussed include: signifying practices, ideology, discourse, as well as identity categories such as class, ‘race’, gender, sexuality and nationality in their interrelation with power and their transformation over time. The course consists of a weekly lecture and is accompanied by mandatory one-hour tutorials.
