Machining Technologies

TU Chemnitz | Wintersemester 2023 / 2024 Machining Technologies

Course Informations

Lecturer: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Dix

Course Type: Lecture with exercises and practicals (in English)
Extent of the course: 1/1/2 (150 working hours, 5 ECTS)
Recommended semester: 3rd semester (Master's programs)
Assessment: written exam (120 min.)
Prerequisite: Module 1.1 Mathematics for Engineering Science
Required prior knowledge: Knowledge of manufacturing processes
Recommended literature: -

Objectives / Contents
Advanced knowledge of machining is imparted. Building on the fundamentals of the process, the design of efficient processes is dealt with in particular. The focus is on the target-oriented selection of the decisive system variables and the determination of the process parameters. Tool selection and the specific determination of cutting parameters are the focal points. The methods of CNC machining are taught in an application-oriented manner using process examples. The objective is the independent process design of turning, milling and waterjet processes including implementation. Finally, the trends in machining are discussed.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- select machining processes with regard to the form elements to be manufactured,
- select system variables such as tools and clamping technology in relation to the component,
- determine process parameters in a target-oriented manner,
- create NC machining programs themselves using various methods,
- optimize milling processes with regard to the criteria of cost and quality,
- to assess the current trends in machining.
