PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Academi, Greenpeace, Avaaz or Chatham House: as diverse as these corporate non-state actors may be, as essential the relationships between those actors and intergovernmental organizations are to contemporary international politics. The numerical increase of civil society organizations and networks as well as hybrid public-private actors in international politics and their growing influence on the creation, implementation and evaluation of international standards and programs necessitates novel theoretical and analytical approaches to interorganisational relationships. In this seminar, we will discuss a number of approaches to interorganisational relationships in the transnational realm. In a first step, the seminar will provide an overview of theories on the dynamics of cooperation and competition between organisations – borrowing also from neighbouring disciplines such as International Law and International Political Sociology. The second part of the seminar serves to apply these theories to empirical case studies (different policy fields, selected organisations and networks) in order to analyse the forms, dynamics, causes and effects of interorgansiational relations. At the end of the seminar, students should be capable to apply theories of interorganisational relations, to assess the usefulness of different analytical and methodological frameworks and to provide a research design for an independently developed research paper in this field of scholarly inquiry.
