VL Gender-inclusive language in a European comparison (De Cesare)

The course is devoted to the forms, functions and uses of gender-inclusive language from a European comparative perspective, considering Romance, Germanic, and Slavic languages. After defining the concept of ‘gender’, it offers an overview of the ways European languages codify gender in their grammatical and lexical system, before turning to the description of innovative typographic strategies (such as the “gender star”) devised to produce gender-inclusive texts. The course also examines the expression of gender in different text types, genres and registers (spanning from emails to legal texts), discourse settings (human-robot interaction) as well as in the output of automatic machine translations (comparing Google Translate to Deepl).
