Understanding Shakespeare (Übung/Blockseminar Westermayer WiSe 22/23)

This course aims to provide a survey of one of the most turbulent and flourishing times in English history – both linguistically and culturally. Not only are we going to meet England’s greatest poet and playwright (*1564-†1616), recite his works in the original pronunciation, and learn about some grammatical oddities of his time. We are also going on an excursion across the Golden Age, where we swing by at the court of Elizabeth I., have vivid discussions with scientists and philosophers, get mesmerized by the beauty of Renaissance art, and sail the seas with Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh. In so doing, we are not only going to learn to understand Shakespeare on a purely linguistic level, but we are also familiarizing ourselves with the zeitgeist that undoubtedly shaped his work
