Course Description:
The aim of the course “NATO into the 21st Century” is to provide students with a solid understanding of the history, changing role, structures, and decision-making of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) since its establishment till today.
The course consists of an online preparation stage in which the students can familiarise themselves with the organisation, its competencies and capabilities and decision-making principles.
The discussion will be directed to explore strategic options for the alliance with regards to Ukraine and its future role as part of the West and possibly the Western alliance.
Daria Isachenko, Göran Swistek, “The Black Sea as Mare Clausum”, SWP Comment 2023/C 33, 21.06.2023 https://www.swp-berlin.org/10.18449/2023C33/
The course then challenges to apply the theoretical learnings in a simulation of NATO decision-making. These discussions will be held in the North-Atlantic Council of NATO. The course is rounded off with a discussion on the alliance and prospects for the future.

The scenario of the simulation: The background is today, the world as it is. The war of aggression by Russia against Ukraine is ongoing. The issues discussed are those discussed in real life (sustained support to UKR, membership in NATO, etc.).
The day is ended with a feedback session on NATO and the Black Sea in 2024 - what we learned, what we understand, what needs to be happening, etc.
