WiSe 24/25 Wearable custom devices for human joint tracking (Projekt)

TU Chemnitz | Wintersemester 2024 / 2025 WiSe 24/25 Wearable custom devices for human joint tracking (Projekt)

Human movement tracking plays a fundamental role in various fields, serving different applications ranging from medical and rehabilitation to sports performance monitoring and industrial ergonomics. State of the art technologies for motion tracking often relies on vision-based systems that despite providing good results are lacking flexibility of use as they are often bond to specific labs or affected by occlusions. To this end, several solutions have been developed that rely on wearable technologies. The aim of this work is to use wearable sensors (e.g. IMUs, flex sensors, pressure sensors) to develop a customized solution for tracking of human joint angle (students are free to choose if focusing on the elbow or on the knee).

Your task:

  • Conduct literature research on human joint angle measurements and on available wearable solutions.

  • Define the functional requirements for an instrumented garment.

  • Realize a prototype.

  • Test and validate the prototype in a user study.

What you should bring:

  • Knowledge in the field of human-machine interaction.

  • Strong organizational skills and an independent working style.

  • Experience in setting up user studies.

The scope of the project can be adapted based on progress and specific requirements, in consultation with the supervisor. No prior experience with sensors is required.

First meeting in KW 42, day will be defined with the students participating in the project.
