Digital Tools for Smart Manufacturing (former Digital Manufacturing)
Professur Produktionssysteme und -prozesse | Wintersemester 2026 / 2027
Digital Tools for Smart Manufacturing (former Digital Manufacturing)
Modern industrial production is characterized by the intensive use of information and communication technology. Intelligent and digitally networked systems form the basis for this. This module provides foundational knowledge of digital tools for the efficient design and optimization of joining, forming, subtractive, and additive manufacturing processes, as well as for the creation of geometric product specifications. Particular emphasis is placed on extended reality technologies and their application in production engineering, the creation and use of digital twins, and the concept of virtual commissioning.
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
- Explain the concept of the digital twin and describe data management systems and platforms ranging from Product Data Management (PDM) to Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and the Industrial Metaverse,
- articulate basic terminology related to the enhancement of 3D CAD models with Product Manufacturing Information (PMI), process data for joining methods, digital tools for additive manufacturing, nonlinear FEM simulation for forming processes, and modeling methods for subtractive processes, and
- describe the fundamentals, applications, and challenges of Extended Reality (XR), create corresponding applications, andbe able to apply XR in medical technology and for virtual commissioning
