Finite Element Method - Theory and Implementation WS 26/27
General information
The course focuses on the core ingredients to develop a Finite Element software - meshes, basis functions, quadrature rules, assembly, etc.
It is part of the course catalog of the Mathematics department, being suitable for all students in the M.Sc. programs

- CMS - Track CE (mandatory)
Lecture and Tutorials
The lecture will be on Tuesday 13:00-14:30 in WIL/B321.
There will be three tutorials groups, two on Wednesday 14:50-16:20 (WIL/A317) and Wednesday 11:10 - 12:40 (Z21/217), and one on Thursday 07:30-09:00 (Z21/217). Please enroll for the course to view all further materials and to hand in the assignment sheets. Additionally, please choose one tutorial and sign in to the corresponding tutorial group.
The tutorial will start in the first week of the semester.
Changes to the schedule
Because of a public holiday in Saxony there will be no tutorials on Wednesday, 18th November.
Assignments
Each week an assignment sheet will be published that should be prepared and submitted before Tuesday 11:59 in the following week. If more than 80% of the tasks in an assignment sheet have been completed correctly, you get bonus points for the exam. For each passed assignment sheet you get 0.5 points of the exam up to a maximum of 5 points.
Submission
In the 'Assignment' section on this website there is as an upload button. Files should be placed there until Tuesday 11:59 and the filename should be kept as is, e.g. assignment_1.ipynb. Changing the filenames will result in automatic failure of the assignment.
Further Studies
For a deeper understanding of the underlying mathematical concepts of the FEM and a more theoretical approach we strongly recommend the lecture Math-Ma-28: Numerical methods for partialdifferential equations – Basic concepts
Repeating Students
The contents of the lecture and the exercises, and therefore also the exam, change every year. We therefore strongly recommend that you visit the exercise sessions and the lectures with new topics. In the same way, we no longer recognize bonus points collected in previous semesters. However, you can collect bonus points again by doing the exercise sheets and handing them in. You have to enroll in the course here on Opal for that.
