Introduction to Mathematical Biology I: Discrete Models

TU Dresden | Wintersemester 2026 / 2027 Introduction to Mathematical Biology I: Discrete Models

Introduction to Mathematical Biology I: Discrete Models

OBJECTIVE
The life sciences are rapidly turning from qualitative to quantitative sciences. To integrate the increasing amount of data in a systematic way, development and application of mathematical models are required. Mathematical biology aims at deciphering the organizational principles of biological systems through mathematical modeling and analysis, using various applied mathematical techniques and tools.

The objective of this lecture series (parts I and II in any order) is to get acquainted with important mathematical models (deterministic, continuous models; differential and partial differential equations; stochastic processes; discrete models, cellular automata and agent-based models). Together with accompanying tutorials, participants receive a profound introduction to modern bio-mathematical concepts.

This semester's advanced course focuses on discrete models from maps for discrete temporal dynamics via cellular automata and agent-based models (overlapping spheres, vertex and CPM) for discrete interacting cell systems to applications (collective cell migration, biological pattern formation, morphogenesis and cancer). Computational tools including BioLGCA, PhysiCell, Chaste, CompuCell3D, Artistoo and Morpheus will be introduced and applied in tutorials.

This advanced course is suitable for but not restricted to (under)graduates in physics, mathematics, biology, computational modeling and simulation, medical and computer science - who already possess a solid understanding of math and/or physics.
