Das Seminar dient zur Vertiefung von und fortgeschrittenen Auseinandersetzung mit klassischen und kontemporären Theorien der Internationalen Beziehungen. Die ersten inhaltlichen Sitzungen dienen der Auseinandersetzung mit der Funktion von Begriffen im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs und der Erarbeitung eines Werkzeugkastens für den geübten Umgang mit Kernkonzepten der IB. Über den weiteren Verlauf des Seminars werden Erklärungspotenziale und Grenzen von IB-Theorien anhand zentraler Konzepte herausgearbeitet und auf empirische Fragestellungen der internationalen Politik angewandt.

Ziel des Seminars ist die selbständige und kritische Auseinandersetzung mit theoretischen Fragestellungen, die Fähigkeit zur Theoriekritik und zum Theorievergleich und, insbesondere, die Erarbeitung theoriegeleiteter Fragestellungen und deren Anwendung auf empirische Phänomene.

Scenarios, Counterfactuals, and Futures of World Politics

Temporal concepts and phenomena have recently received increasing attention in theoretical and empirical work in International Relations. In many cases, attention has been directed at the problem of periodization, or at the diverse temporal logics of international actors, or at their perception of time.

But whereas the wider discipline is still strongly focused on observing the present and interpreting the past, in a global empirical context driven by crisis and structural contingency, foresight methods that enable systematic engagement with an uncertain future are increasingly in demand. This seminar will address this demand by engaging conceptually and methodologically with the problem of the future of world politics.

After an introduction dealing with the impact of futurity on social and international processes in both historical and theoretical terms, counterfactuals and scenarios as narrative-based methods for projecting empirical data into the future and creating descriptions of contingent futures of world politics will be practiced by the participants in workshop sessions.
