The EdUp teacher twinning project, “Mining and Society (UNESCO Development Goals and Mining)” is a collaboration between TU BAF (Germany) Prof. Dr. Carsten Drebenstedt, Head of the Institute of Mining and Specialized Civil Engineering and the Dnipro University of Technology (Ukraine) Assoc. Prof., Dr. Andrii Cherep, Department of Surface Mining.

The relationship between mining activities and societal development is multifaceted, intertwining economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social equity. The course “Mining and Society (UNESCO Development Goals and Mining)” explores the intersection of mining practices and the UNESCO Development Goals, particularly focusing on their implications for sustainable development in resource-rich regions. It examines the potential of mining to contribute to economic advancement while addressing the challenges posed by environmental degradation, social displacement, and inequitable resource distribution. By analysing case studies from various regions, this course highlights best practices and policy frameworks that facilitate the alignment of mining operations with the UNESCO Development Goals. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for stakeholder engagement, technological innovation, and regulatory frameworks that promote responsible mining practices. Ultimately, this course outlines for a paradigm shift that redefines the role of mining as a catalyst for sustainable development, thereby fostering an inclusive approach that enhances societal wellbeing while safeguarding environmental integrity. The course is for underscore the critical importance of integrating mining strategies with global development agendas to achieve holistic and sustainable societal outcomes.
