Highly-configurable software systems combine benefits of software platforms, such as systematic reuse, reduced costs, and faster time-to-market; while providing high customization to meet the needs of diverse domains, environments, or user groups. 

Optimizing such software systems enables derivation of high-quality products regarding functional and non-functional properties, but is challenging since the configuration space is vast. Self-optimizing properties allow the system to automate identification of promising configuration.
