Wednesday, 13:45-15:15, A10.368.1 (alt: 1/368A) First meeting: 15.04.2026
Content
This seminar explores current developments at the intersection of corpus linguistics, artificial intelligence, and serious game design for language research and pedagogy. Topics of discussion will include the role of large language models in linguistic research and teaching, corpus construction and evaluation, DDL task design, and the principles of serious game design in educational technology contexts. Students will gain hands-on experience working with corpus tools, critically evaluating AI applications, and designing corpus-informed learning materials and game prototypes. The seminar culminates in mini research projects and a final paper, giving students direct experience of the full research cycle from design through to scholarly writing in the rapidly evolving landscape of digital linguistics and emerging technologies.
Objectives
By the end of the course, students are able to:
- critically engage with current theoretical and empirical debates at the intersection of corpus linguistics, AI, and serious game design for language research and pedagogy
- apply linguistic and second language acquisition theories alongside AI-driven methods to inform the design, analysis, and evaluation of digital language learning environments and tools
- assess and use corpus tools, large language models, and game-based frameworks against principled linguistic and pedagogical criteria
- conduct independent small-scale empirical research and communicate findings in academic written and oral formats within the field of digital linguistics and emerging technologies
Prerequisites
None
Requirements for credits
Active participation, group assignment as well as a final written term paper of 15-18 pages.
