This course offers a concise introduction to the European Union’s institutional law and the fundamental freedoms of the internal market. Following a brief overview of the EU’s historical development, we will examine the sources of EU Law, the EU’s institutional architecture, the division of competences, and the system of legal protection under the TFEU. Furthermore, we will consider the direct effect and the primacy (supremacy) of EU Law, and survey the Fundamental Freedoms with particular emphasis on the free movement of goods. Throughout the course, we will work with the EU Treaties and key provisions and engage with relevant case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
