MIPEF - Create – Protect – Innovate (MIPEF): Bringing ideas to market (Part I, II & IP Management)
The course “Create – Protect – Innovate: Bringing ideas to market” developed by the European Patent Office is aimed at master’s and PhD students and will teach you how to protect inventions and bring them to market and provide you with valuable insights into the world of innovation. It consists of three parts (entry and advanced level, IP Management), each containing five self-paced modules and offered in autumn and Spring.
The coursed offer you unique opportunities to follow inventors’ real-life stories, understand why and how they patent their inventions and learn how intellectual property rights (IPRs) can be integrated into business strategies. Each module is based on a carefully selected set of case studies, many of which involve inventors who have been nominated for or won the European Patent Office’s European Inventor Award.
Students can independently complete the modules at their own pace. The modules consist of high-quality videos, podcasts and interactive educational elements. These explain the theory behind new concepts and provide exercises and case studies to help learners consolidate their knowledge. There is also a multiplechoice quiz at the end of each module. In addition, a wide variety of resources are included for further study. A final exam, marked by experts in intellectual property (IP), will serve to test your knowledge.
Through a unique platform, tutored forum and interactive live sessions, you will meet different IP experts. If you complete all relevant activities, you will be awarded an EPO certificate.

What happens after I register?
You should receive a confirmation email. If it does not arrive, contact academy@epo.org. Then create an EPO account on the European Patent Academy learning platform using the same email address.
Do I need to attend the masterclasses?
No. Masterclasses are optional live sessions that support your learning. However, they are not recorded.
What do I need to know about the exam?
The exam is open-book and covers the course content. To take it, you must complete all five modules and score at least 80/100 in each end-of-module quiz. The performance in the end-of-module quiz does not influence the final grade.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. If you pass with at least 70/100, you will receive an EPO certificate. Download it before the course closes (usually a month after the grades are published).
Can I receive ECTS?
Some universities may award ECTS for successful completion. The EPO shares results, but each university makes the final decision.
