Analytical Micromagnetism
Description and purpose of the course:
Using the language of classical field theory based on the Landau-Lifshitz equation, we will learn how to describe magnetization dynamics in ferro- and antiferromagnets. Particular attention will be paid to the study of topological magnetic solitons. Modern topics, such as the fundamental magnetic properties of altermagnets (magnon spectra, transport characteristics) and/or curvature effects in low-dimensional magnets, will be covered as additional chapters upon audience request. Students who have completed the course will be able to calculate the spectra of spin waves, the structure of domain walls, skyrmions, merons, and their dynamics under the action of a spin-polarized current or an applied magnetic field.
Desirable knowledge:
- basics of the calculus of variations
- basics of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism
