The NESDSC is divided into four major phases:

  1. Literature Review and work on scientific publication from the catalogue
  2. Review phase
  3. Final Paper preparation
  4. Presentation

Phase 1 (Literature work)

In the first phase, the student chooses a scientific publication from the Topic Assignement Page that falls into his interest and expertise and signs in within the given time period.

The student should then start to read the paper and carry out an extensive literature survey on the topic to get a good overview of the field of research, that is covered in the paper.

The findings of this literature work should then be summarized and presented within an essay paper that must not exceed 3 pages, with the use of IEEE format (word/Latex).

The essay paper will then be submitted to a conference system for the reviewing phase.

Note: The content of your essay contributes more significantly than the format to your final grade, please request for consultation in understanding the paper when neccessary!

Phase 2 (Review)

Each student gets automatically assigned two papers on which he/she has to do a review. The review will be carried out according to the review form proposed by the conference system.

In order to give a good review, it is suggested that the student read both the original paper and the essay paper. In this way, student will have a better understanding of the content and give fairer comments.

The purpose of this reviewing phase is to let students expose to more topics and learn from each other.

Phase 3 (Final Paper Preparation)

The third phase starts with the incorporation of the review results returned from the conference system. The student should take the reviews into account carefully as the final version of the essay paper will be used for the grading of the course. When this is done, the student finally submits his/her paper to the conference system.

Phase 4 (Presentation)

After final submission, the student starts to prepare the presentation of his/her essay paper for the final conference. One can use PowerPoint or similar presentation tools. Also latex beamer might be used for preparation of the presentation.

The course ends with the presentation of all essay papers at the NESDSC one day conference!

Grading of the course: paper grade (1/2) + presentation grade (1/2), i.e. both grades are equally weighted.
