Goal of the course:

This course is intended to provide a comprehensive introduction into the diverse field of surface science, focusing on the preparation and characterization of crystal surfaces and crystalline thin films. After finishing the course, students should be familiar with the structure and electronic properties of surfaces as well as the basic principles of various (mostly vacuum-based) surface analysis and preparation techniques. The first part of the course will recap important aspects of atomic and solid state physics. See the full course schedule in the menu.

 

Organization of the course:

This course consists a Lecture and Exercise. All classes will be held in person only. You can find more information, lecture slides and study materials in the respective tabs on the left.

 

Lecture: Surfaces, Thin films and Interfaces

The lecture is the "heart" of the course. Occassionally, we will use the interactive Audience Response System Particify during the lectures, which can be accessed via smartphone or laptop. Lecture slides will be available for download prior to the lectures - please note that they are not intended to replace attendance or self-study. I will not provide an extensive script for the lecture, but there will be some book and literature recommendations for students interested in going beyond the provided materials.

Exercise: Surfaces, Thin films and Interfaces

In the exercise, we will deepen our understanding of the topics of the lecture by discussing specific examples, calculations, or recent scientific papers from the field. It is also a perfect opportunity for you to ask questions. Active participation is encouraged - worksheets will be uploaded well in advance. More information will be provided in the first lecture of the year.

Examinations:

For most students, the course will conclude with a written exam at the end of the semester, while some will have an oral examination instead. Both oral and written exams will concentrate on demonstrating your understanding of the concepts and methods discussed during the lectures and exercises. There will be no extensive calculations, and it will be a closed-book exam (no notes or aids allowed). The majority of the exams will be concerned with Parts II - V of the course. Please remember that having a basic understanding of Part I is essential for the whole course. In the written exam, there will be a mix of multiple choice questions and detailed questions about specific methods. In the method sections, answers should be given in writing and/or using sketches that convey the main principles of the technique or problem. Please remember that the exam will only be 60 min, so your written answers should be short and concise.
