The way you speak gives away much about who you are – language(s) and language use are important resources in creating and maintaining your identity as an individual, as a member of a specific speech community, and/or as a member of a specific nation. In the wider English-speaking world, the tension between the global and the local may prompt speakers either to adhere to traditional dialects in order to pledge allegiance to a local culture, or it may give rise to new multilingual and multicultural identities. In this course, we will explore how speakers create and exploit linguistic resources in order to express their personal, national, and/or ethnic identities.
