Short description:
This interdisciplinary course explores the historical roots of science and engineering by investigating the role of alchemy, natural philosophy, and magical thought in Europe. It is primarily aimed at master’s and PhD students with technical backgrounds, though it is also open to the public. Through engagement with primary texts, lectures on landmark experiments and key figures, and critical discussion, participants will trace how mystical, experimental, and artisanal traditions influenced the development of early modern science. The course examines the cultural, philosophical, and technological legacy of alchemical and magical thinking as foundational to later scientific and engineering paradigms.
