Teaching in Higher Education: A Crash Course for New University Teachers.

TU Chemnitz | Wintersemester 2026 / 2027 Teaching in Higher Education: A Crash Course for New University Teachers.

How can you turn your subject expertise into a course that supports student learning throughout the semester? This practical crash course introduces key principles of teaching and learning in higher education. It is designed for new lecturers as well as experienced teachers who would like to refresh their knowledge and reconsider their teaching practice.

Participants will explore the factors that influence student learning, reflect on their role as university teachers and examine how students’ prior knowledge and different learning needs can be taken into account. They will formulate learning outcomes, apply the principles of Constructive Alignment and connect learning outcomes with suitable learning activities, assessment and feedback.

Throughout the workshop, participants will experience selected methods from a student perspective, reflect on their effects and apply the ideas directly to their own teaching. Short inputs alternate with individual planning, peer feedback and collaborative work. By the end of the course, each participant will have developed an initial, coherent plan for an upcoming course or semester.

Learning objectives - After completing the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify factors that support successful teaching and student learning in higher education;
  • formulate learning outcomes and align them with suitable learning activities and assessment;
  • select teaching methods that fit the course format, the intended learning outcomes and the students’ learning needs;
  • develop an initial plan for an upcoming course or semester and identify the next steps required for its implementation.
