The „Life@Lab 2 – Horizons of AI Research in Higher Education“ symposium, held at the SLUB Open Science Lab of Technische Universität Dresden on 12–13 February 2025, brought together leading experts to explore the evolving role of responsible and sustainable artificial intelligence in higher education. The event focused on AI’s potential to enhance learning, teaching, and research while addressing ethical, practical, and pedagogical implications.
Keynote speakers provided thought-provoking insights, including:
- Sonja Schmer-Galunder (University of Florida) on „The AI Monoculture: Preserving Human Diversity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.“
- Stefanie Kunkel (RIFS Potsdam) on „Beyond Energy Efficiency: Rethinking ‘Green AI’ and Its (Indirect) Environmental Impacts.“
- Jan Plass (New York University) on „Generative AI and Personalization of Learning.“
In addition to keynotes, the symposium featured interactive workshops and breakout sessions, fostering dynamic discussions among participants.

This event was realized through collaboration with:
- Arbeitskreis E-Learning der Landesrektorenkonferenz Sachsen (AK E-Learning),
- Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (ScaDS.AI) Dresden/Leipzig,
- Center for Open Digital Innovation and Participation (CODIP) at TU Dresden,
- Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB).
This symposium was an integral part of the nationwide project „Konzertierte Weiterbildungen zu künstlicher Intelligenz in der Hochschullehre“ initiated by the Netzwerk Landeseinrichtungen für die digitale Hochschullehre (NeL) and funded by the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre.
